What is an HVAC System, and How Does it Work?

We all have HVAC systems installed in our homes and offices, yet many of us are still unaware of what exactly is meant by an HVAC system, what care needs to be taken, how it works, and much more.

What is an HVAC System?

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This system is responsible for heating and cooling your home and includes appliances like furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, ductwork, thermostats, and other home comforting control devices.
HVAC is a system that regulates and circulates the heated and cooled air throughout residential and commercial buildings, from homes to offices to indoor stadiums.

The critical thing about HVAC equipment is it circulates air. The system generally works to pass the warm air into the home or out of it.
Appliances like air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces capture and produce the heat, which is then, with the help of a blower and ductwork, circulated throughout the space.

How Does the HVAC System Work?

HVAC systems work by taking in the fresh air and using a mechanical ventilation system to heat or cool it to the desired temperature suitable for your comfort.

Thus, it helps circulate clean and healthy air throughout your living space.

To start with, HVAC systems have three main sections

  • A heating unit
  • A cooling unit
  • A duct to move the air

HVAC basically controls the moisture, temperature, and humidity levels in your home and improves the air quality through air filters that catch bacteria, spores, and virus-sized particles.

Let’s see their working according to some of the different HVAC appliances

Working System of Air Conditioners

Air conditioners have fans that pull air in and circulate it over the evaporator’s coils. As these coils are filled with refrigerants, they pull heat from the air and cool it.

Further moved into the air handler, this cooled-down air is pushed into the ducts with the help of a blower.
As the air conditioner absorbs all the heat, the refrigerant vaporizes and travels into the compressor, pressuring it. The condenser further condenses it into a liquid. With the condensation, the heat is thrown out and blown away by a fan.

Working System of a Furnace

Furnaces are used to provide heat; as opposed to Air conditioners, the air is pulled in through the ducts and pushed into the furnace.
As the furnace runs, the combustion chamber heats the heat exchanger to the set temperature.
Air is pushed through the exchanger, heated, and blown by the motor through the ducts and back into the house.

Conclusion

With today’s tightly sealed compact homes and offices, this requires the use of fans, blowers, filters, and ducts. HVAC system bring in ventilation that brings fresh air into a building.
